The Cost of Benevolence

Post by Gaydan on Sun Oct 08, 2017 5:16 am

There is a scam going around the GE these days that involves a person asking people to buy them something in the grand exchange because they hit their limit. They'll say "item is selling around X price, I'll pay Y, need 20k more". This gets the attention of other people, especially if the scammer says the item has a 5k limit or so. Sometimes, an accomplice will approach, pretend to trade, and just say "ty" or the scammer will say "only need 15k more".

The scam happens because the scammer is asking for items with very low trade volume that have an inflated price, such as opal necklaces. Opal necklaces are listed in the GE for a little over 1600gp each at market, yet they are only worth 400-500. The scammer knows this, and puts his opal necklaces up for sale at a few under X price, so his inventory sells to you instantly. Then he logs out, and advertises again in a different world until he has sold his stock.

This scam is scummy in a few ways. Firstly, it preys on the benevolence of other players because oftentimes there are people who legitimately hit their limit on things like mithril dart tips, alchables, cannonballs, food to cook, etc.. This makes it more believable.
The second effect of this scam is now people won't trust others when asked to buy things for them because of limit. This trust has been violated and a lesson has been learned (hopefully), and now it will be harder for others to get a little friendly help.

In conclusion, look out for yourselves, clannies. Scamming happens regularly and it sucks, but it can be avoided by proactivity. Looking up the item's trade volume on the GE charts is a good indicator on if an item is legit, and it also shows what the item is going for. Another thing you can do is ask them what they need it for, and if it's obscure (like an opal necklace), they probably won't have an answer for you.

Keep an eye out for scammers, and report it when you see it. It's harder to be scammed when you're not bankstanding, so get out there and grind that skill you've been meaning to! Happy scaping and merry gains Very Happy
